Nigeria’s largest badminton championship is on the brink of making history, with over 300 players set to compete in what promises to be a thrilling showcase of skill, determination, and passion.
The event has drawn elite athletes, including male and female players ranked in the top 20, as well as seasoned veterans and legends eager to be part of the action. The excitement surrounding this competition has reached unprecedented levels, sparking widespread anticipation.
Speaking ahead of the tournament, Dr. Usman Usman expressed his delight at the overwhelming response from players. “I am happy to see such significant interest in this championship, likely driven by the attractive prize money. This is a great boost for the sport,” he said.
“We discussed the prize money extensively before the event, and I’m pleased it has generated this level of participation. Our aim is to build on this success, creating more opportunities for badminton players to benefit from their hard work and dedication,” Dr. Usman added.
The tournament kicks off on Wednesday, December 11, and runs until December 14 at the Gymnasium Hall of the MKO Abiola Stadium. With record-breaking prize money at stake—₦1 million for the men’s singles champion and ₦700,000 for the women’s singles champion—the event is poised to redefine badminton in Nigeria.
