Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has announced the employment of 15 successful athletes who excelled in various national and international competitions.

Speaking at his residence in Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South LGA, during a reception for these athletes, Otti commended them for their achievements and for bringing pride to the state.

The event celebrated the Abia State Sports Council athletes who shone at the Paralympics in Paris, the para badminton team that performed well in Uganda, and the under-15 team that participated in the national youth games in Asaba, Delta State.

Describing the occasion as one of his happiest moments in office, Otti also approved several requests from the Sports Council. These include a new operational coaster bus, an official vehicle for the Director, improved working conditions for staff, upgrades to the Director of Sports’ office, and maintenance for the Umuahia Township stadium. He emphasized that these initiatives are aimed at boosting athletes’ morale, retaining talent, and preventing them from leaving the state for better opportunities.

Additionally, Otti announced cash rewards totaling N20 million for two Paralympic powerlifting champions from Abia, Onyinyechi Gift Mark and Esther Nworgu, along with N33 million for other athletes and N22 million for the coaching staff.

The Governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to inclusivity, stating that anyone living in Abia is considered an Abian, regardless of origin. He expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Sports and Youth Development for their dedication and reaffirmed his commitment to promoting youth participation in sports.

Otti also acknowledged former Super Eagles player and coach Christian Chukwu, promising to ensure he receives the best medical care, stating, “Any society that forgets its heroes is doomed to fail.”

In his address, the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Mr. Nwaobilor Ananaba, credited the sports council’s achievements to Governor Otti’s unwavering support. He noted that the successes at the recent Paralympic games and national competitions stem from significant investments in sports infrastructure and athlete development.

The Commissioner highlighted how the Governor’s sponsorship for athletes to compete in international events has been crucial to their success, enhancing Abia’s reputation in sports.

Comrade Obioma George, the State Director of Sports, praised the Governor for revitalizing grassroots sports in Abia, which has begun to yield positive results. He noted that the last time athletes were honored in such a manner was in 2004.

George presented the athletes and listed the numerous achievements of the Sports Council over the past year, asserting that Abia’s results are among the best in the Southeast. He expressed hope for further success with continued support, including operational vehicles, employment opportunities for top athletes and coaches, and upgrades to facilities.
