Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North Senatorial District, has called on President Bola Tinubu to appoint ambassadors for Nigeria, stressing that the country risks losing out on the economic and diplomatic gains of the president’s numerous international engagements if key diplomatic positions remain vacant.

 

In a video shared on his official Facebook page, the former Abia State governor praised President Tinubu’s foreign travels, describing them as beneficial for Nigeria’s economy and Africa’s broader development. However, he noted that without ambassadors in place to follow through on agreements and partnerships, much of the potential impact could be lost.

 

“The traveling of Tinubu is very good for our country and its economic development,” Kalu said. “He can’t just be president of Abuja. Tinubu should deploy more diplomacy.”

He continued:

“Our dear President Bola Tinubu has done well in his international engagements for the benefit of Nigeria. But it’s also time the President appointed ambassadors so that the country can reap the full benefits of these diplomatic and economic engagements in several countries.”

 

Senator Kalu’s remarks highlight growing concerns over Nigeria’s prolonged delay in appointing ambassadors more than two years after President Tinubu assumed office in May 2023.

 

Diplomatic experts and analysts have also pointed out that the absence of ambassadors in key countries hampers Nigeria’s foreign policy execution and limits the country’s influence on global platforms.

 

As Nigeria continues to seek foreign investments, strategic partnerships, and international support on security, trade, and climate action, Kalu’s call is expected to renew pressure on the presidency to act swiftly on diplomatic appointments.
