Nigeria’s junior tennis stars Success Ogunjobi and Lucky Danjuma have made significant leaps in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior Rankings, following impressive performances at the recently concluded J30 Abuja tournament.

 

Ogunjobi, who had consistently trailed as Nigeria’s second-highest ranked junior, cemented her place as the country’s new No. 1 female junior after an astonishing double-title win in Abuja. Her back-to-back victories have propelled her to 596th in the world, as per the ITF rankings released on Monday, June 16, 2025.

 

The teenage sensation’s rise sees her leapfrog former top-ranked Nigerian junior, Ohunene Yakubu, establishing a commanding lead over her compatriots. Ogunjobi’s form and consistency are being hailed as a breakthrough in Nigeria’s push for greater visibility in global junior tennis.

 

Another emerging talent, Goodnews Aina, also recorded a notable improvement. Her performance in the J30 event saw her climb 33 spots to 1460th, placing her among the top four Nigerian girls in the junior global standings.

 

In the boys’ category, Lucky Danjuma continues to solidify his status as one of Nigeria’s brightest prospects. Fresh off winning both legs of the J30 Abuja tournament, the 18-year-old now sits at 390th globally, marking a strong finish to his junior career.

 

Danjuma is currently Nigeria’s fourth-ranked junior male, trailing only Franklin Jimoh (ranked 387th) and Prosperity Okonkwo, who holds the No. 3 Nigerian position, about 100 places ahead. With 2026 marking the end of his junior eligibility, Danjuma is now expected to transition into senior competitions.

 

The double triumph in Abuja has further spotlighted Nigeria’s growing presence in junior tennis, with several players now inching closer to the top echelons of the ITF global rankings. Tennis analysts say the success of Ogunjobi and Danjuma is a reflection of years of gradual development in youth tennis within the country.
