Group C

Group C is purely a WAFU group, which Qualifiers may not be decided until the last matches. This group should be the Group of Death. Meanwhile, we assess the teams based on the facts on ground. 

GUINEA (Sylis National ) 

The Guinea national football team  have never qualified for the FIFA World Cup finals, and their best finish in the Africa Cup of Nations was runners-up in 1976. The team reached the quarter-finals in four recent tournaments (2004, 2006, 2008 and 2015). They are nickname Syli National which means the National Elephants. 

On FIFA ranking, they are Currently  ranked number 80 as at 26 October 2023. Their highest ranking was number 22 which they attained in August 2006. 

Their First international match was against Togo on 9 of May 1962 which the lost 1-2.

They have been in 14 different editions of the Africa Cup of Nations starting from 1970 and their best result was as runners up in 1976. 

 In 1963, Guinea entered its first qualification campaign for an Africa Cup of Nations, the 1963 tournament in Ghana. They were drawn in a two-legged qualifier against Nigeria, Guinea drew the first leg 2–2 away on 27 July, and on 6 October won 1–0 at home to win 3–2 on aggregate. They were later disqualified for using Guinean officials in the second leg, and Nigeria went through to the finals in their place. 

In 1965, Guinea entered the qualifiers for the 1965 African Cup of Nations in Tunisia and was placed in Group A with Senegal and Mali. On 28 February, they lost 2–0 in Senegal before beating them 3–0 at home on 31 March, Senegal's win over Mali allowed them to qualify instead of Guinea.

During the 1976 African Cup of Nations the Guinean team finished second to Morocco, only missing out on the championship by a point.

In 2001, FIFA expelled the country from the qualification process of the 2002 World Cup and 2002 African Cup of Nations due to government interference in football.They returned to international action in September 2002 after a two-year ban from competition.In the 2004 African Cup of Nations, Guinea reached the quarter-finals, scoring the first goal against Mali before ultimately losing 2–1, conceding the winning goal in the last minute of the match. Guinea reached the quarter-final stage again in the 2006 tournament, taking the lead against Senegal before losing 3–2. 2008 saw Guinea reach the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations for a third successive tournament, only to suffer a 5–0 defeat against Côte d'Ivoire.

In 2012, Guinea beat Botswana 6–1 in the group stage of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, becoming the first side to score six goals in an Africa Cup of Nations game since Côte d'Ivoire in 1970.The team subsequently exited the tournament at the group stage after a draw against Ghana.

On 4 January 2016, CAF lifted a ban on Guinea playing their home international in Guinea after it was declared free of Ebola by the U.N. World Health Organization in December 2015.

On the ranking for possibility of winning the AFCON trophy in Ivory Coast, Guinea is rated 3 over 10.

CAMEROON (INDOMITABLE LIONS) 

The Cameroon national football team, also known as the Indomitable Lions. 

They are one of the formidable teams in Africa. On FIFA ranking, they are currently 43 as at 26 October 2023. The highest they have attained in the ranking is number 11 on November 2006, January 2007 and November – December 2009. 

The Indomitable Lions have appeared at the World Cup 8 times with the first in 1982. They were the first African country to qualify for the 
Quarter-finals of the Senior World Cup in 1990. 

At the Africa Cup of Nations, they have appeared 20 times with the first been in 1970. They were Champions in 1984, 1988, 2000, 2002, 2017. 

On the rankings of possible winners of Cameroon is ranked 7 over 10.

GAMBIA (SCORPIONS) 

The Gambia national football team was until 1965, known as British Gambia. The team has never qualified for the World Cup. In 2021, Gambia qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations finals for the first time in history. The team is nicknamed the Scorpions. In current FIFA ranking, they are number 117, which they attained on 26 October 2023. Their highest ever ranking was 65 which they attained on June 2009. 

Their first international match as British Gambia was on 9 February 1953 against Sierra Leone which they won by 2-1 

They have only appeared at the Africa Cup of Nations twice and their best result was in the 2021 when they got to the quarter-finals. Their chance of winning the trophy is 2 over 10.

SENEGAL ( LIONS OF TERANGA) 

The Senegal national football team, nicknamed Les Lions de la Teranga (meaning: The Lions of Teranga), They are the current champions of both the Africa Cup of Nations and African Nations Championship. Their current FIFA ranking is number 20 as at 26 October 2023. Their highest ever FIFA ranking was Number 18 attained in February – December 2022, April – July 2023

They have been to the World Cup 3 times first in 2002, and best result was a quarter-finals berth in 2002. 

At the Africa Cup of Nations, the have appeared 17 times, with the first been in 1965.

Their best results were been Champions in 2021. They are also the champions of the African Nations Championship, which they won in 2022.

Senegal is rated as a potential winner of the AFCON in Ivory Coast. They are rated 8 over 10.
