The former Governor of Edo State, His Excellency Mr. Godwin Obaseki, and his wife, Betsy Obaseki, have announced a ₦10 million cash reward for the players and technical crew of Edo Queens. This gesture comes in recognition of the team’s nomination as CAF Women’s Club of the Year and their remarkable performance in the recently concluded CAF Champions League.

Edo Queens, the reigning champions of the Nigerian Women’s Football League (NWFL), have not only dominated the local scene but also earned recognition on the continental stage with their CAF nomination. Speaking through his Media Adviser, Crusoe Osagie, Obaseki highlighted the team’s achievements as a testament to the sports reforms initiated during his administration from 2016 to 2024.

In a statement, Obaseki said, “Our superstar Edo Queens have continued to make us proud with their exploits, which have placed Edo State and Nigeria on Africa’s football map. This nomination validates the impact of deliberate investments in sports during our administration, positioning Edo State as a hub of excellence in sports.”

Grassroots Investments Drive Success
Osagie further credited the success to initiatives like the Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament (BOWFT), which provided a platform for young women to hone their skills and advance to world-class levels. He noted, “These bold reforms were instrumental in building a foundation for the success we are celebrating today.”

The ₦10 million reward underscores the Obasekis’ commitment to sports development and serves as motivation for Edo Queens to continue their outstanding performances on the field
