Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has urged Nigerian leaders to wisely utilize the country’s abundant resources to foster development, emphasizing that God did not intend for Nigerians to endure hardship.

Speaking at the 40th anniversary celebration of the Methodist Archdiocese of Abuja on Sunday, Obasanjo highlighted Nigeria’s potential for prosperity, echoing the message of Methodist Prelate Dr. Oliver Aba about the importance of recognizing God’s blessings.

“Just as other nations have been endowed with resources, Nigeria has been similarly blessed with the Rivers Niger and Benue, crude oil, fertile land, and various natural resources,” he stated. “I firmly believe that God did not create Nigeria to struggle. We have everything we need; it is our responsibility to acknowledge His generosity, especially considering that many countries lack what we possess.”

Obasanjo called on leaders, clergy, and citizens to pray for the nation’s healing, acknowledging that the current state of Nigeria is not a reflection of divine will. “We have squandered God’s gifts, but if we humble ourselves and seek Him, He will heal our land,” he added.

President Bola Tinubu, represented by Mr. Nyesom Wike, praised the Methodist Church Nigeria for its dedication to social justice, education, and humanitarian efforts. In his message, Tinubu celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Abuja Archdiocese, recognizing its enduring commitment to faith, community, and service over 183 years in Nigeria.

“The Methodist Church has played a significant role in our nation’s development, transforming lives through its initiatives in social justice and education,” he noted. “As leaders, we acknowledge our responsibilities and the importance of overcoming challenges together.”

In his message titled “Our Appreciation and Gratitude to God,” Prelate Dr. Oliver Aba emphasized the need to appreciate God amid adversity. Drawing from the story of the ten lepers in Luke 17:15-17, he pointed out that only one returned to express gratitude after being healed.

Aba urged calmness and faith, stating, “Nigeria, remain hopeful; there is light at the end of the tunnel. We have a promised land to look forward to.”

During the service, several notable figures were honored with the Knights of John Wesley award, including Obasanjo, Yakubu Gowon, Tinubu and his wife Oluremi, Goodluck Jonathan, George Akume, and Godswill Akpabio, among others.
