NWFL Match Day 1: Upsets and Thrilling Finishes Mark Opening Matches
The 2024/2025 Nigeria Women Football League Premiership kicked off with a bang, as Week 1 delivered thrilling matches, upsets, and impressive performances.
In Yenagoa, Bayelsa Queens edged out Delta Queens 1-0, thanks to Sefiat Idris's late winner in the 94th minute. The match was intense, with both teams creating scoring opportunities, but Bayelsa's determination paid off in the end.
Rivers Angels made a strong statement in Port Harcourt, defeating Ibom Angels 2-1. Helen Daniel's own goal in the 5th minute gave Rivers the lead, but Joy Michael's equalizer in the 19th minute brought Ibom back into the game. Ifeoma Ikenokwalu's 78th-minute winner sealed the victory for Rivers.
Ekiti Queens secured a hard-fought 1-0 win over Heartland Queens in Ado Ekiti, courtesy of Odunayo Olaleye's 74th-minute strike.
Confluence Queens suffered a shocking 3-1 defeat to Remo Stars Ladies in Anyigba. Idayat Olanrewaju opened the scoring for Confluence in the 25th minute, but Remo Stars fought back with goals from Olasubomi Ogundele, Oluwaseyi Arubo, and Olamide Bolaji.
Nasarawa Amazons narrowly beat Dannaz Ladies 1-0 in Lafia, with Shola Shobowale scoring the winner in the 90th minute.
Edo Queens made a dominant statement in Benin, thrashing Abia Angels 5-0. Miracle Usani, Emem Essien, Goodness Osigwe, Loveth Edet, and Kafayat Mafisere all scored for Edo Queens.
In another high-scoring match, Robo Queens defeated Benue Queens 5-1 in Lafia. Favour Nkwocha, Tosin Rafiu, Annastasia Emefo, Kemi Adegbuyi, and Mariam Yahaya all found the net for Robo Queens.
