Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has revealed what inspired his decisive performance in Nigeria’s penalty shootout victory over Egypt in the third-place playoff at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, according to Soccernet.

 

Nigeria secured the bronze medal after a tense, goalless 90 minutes at the Mohamed V Stadium in Casablanca on Saturday, with the encounter producing few clear-cut chances. With no extra time played, the match was decided by a penalty shootout, where composure and preparation proved decisive.

 

Nwabali emerged as the hero of the night, producing two superb saves to deny Egypt’s first two penalty takers, Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush. His early interventions handed Nigeria a commanding advantage, which the Super Eagles capitalized on as Akor Adams, Moses Simon, Alex Iwobi, and Ademola Lookman calmly converted their spot kicks to seal a 4–2 victory.

 

Speaking during his post-match press conference, Nwabali explained that careful observation and admiration for Egypt’s star players played a key role in his success.

 

“The penalty saves will boost me a lot. These guys, Salah and Marmoush, I always watch them a lot in the Premier League. So it’s really going to boost me,” Nwabali said. “Salah was the one I was targeting, so it was nice for me.”

 

The 29-year-old shot-stopper had endured criticism earlier in the tournament, particularly following a costly mistake against Tunisia in the group stage. However, his commanding display in the semifinal against Morocco and his match-winning performance against Egypt highlighted his resilience and ability to deliver under pressure.

 

Nwabali’s heroics earned him the Man of the Match award and further cemented his status as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper.
