The National Sports Commission (NSC) has called on stakeholders in Nigerian basketball to prioritize unity and the growth of the sport as the Nigeria Basketball Federation prepares for its elections later this year.

 

The appeal follows recent directives from FIBA, which outlined a clear framework for the conduct of elections under existing statutes and internal regulations.

Director General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, emphasized the importance of putting the game above individual interests, describing the period as critical for the future of basketball in Nigeria.

 

“This is a crucial moment for basketball in Nigeria. We must all put the game first. The future of our athletes, our national teams, and our global reputation depends on collective responsibility and adherence to due process,” Olopade said.

 

He further urged stakeholders across the basketball ecosystem to embrace dialogue, respect established regulations, and work collaboratively toward a credible and transparent electoral process.

In its communication, FIBA confirmed that the tenure of the current NBBF board will run until October 15, 2026. It also directed that elections into a new board must be conducted within a defined window—no earlier than September 15 and no later than October 15, 2026.

 

The timeline is designed to follow the conclusion of the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup scheduled for September 2026, ensuring that the electoral process does not disrupt Nigeria’s participation in major international competitions.

Olopade reiterated the NSC’s commitment to fostering a stable and progressive basketball structure in Nigeria. He noted that aligning with global best practices remains essential to safeguarding the country’s standing in international basketball.

 

The Commission’s position underscores the need for a peaceful and orderly transition within the NBBF, as stakeholders look to strengthen governance and sustain Nigeria’s growing reputation in the global basketball community.

 

With the election timeline now clearly defined, attention is expected to shift toward building consensus and ensuring that the process reflects transparency, fairness, and the collective aspirations of Nigerian basketball.
