It was an emotion-laden moment in Bauchi as the leadership and members of the Nigeria Football Referees’ Association (NFRA) met with the family of their late President, Sani Zubairu, during the three-day Fidau prayers held in his honour.

 

The late football administrator passed away in the early hours of Monday, throwing the refereeing community into deep mourning. Members of the association who had been in Bauchi since the announcement of his death were joined by the National Executive Committee, led by the Deputy President, Kelechi Mejuobi.

 

Speaking during the condolence visit, Mejuobi conveyed the association’s grief to the bereaved family, noting that Zubairu’s untimely demise has left a significant void within the refereeing body.

 

“While we share in the pain of this great loss, the entire refereeing family is in deep mourning. The gap created by his death is one that will not be easily filled,” he said.

 

He described the late Zubairu as a devoted servant of Nigerian referees, emphasizing his lifelong commitment to the growth and welfare of match officials across the country.

 

“Late FIFA Sani Zubairu lived for referees. Everything about him was dedicated to refereeing, which is why we are still in tears. He made remarkable contributions to the development of our noble association, serving diligently in various capacities within the NFRA and the Nigeria Football Federation,” Mejuobi added.

 

According to him, Zubairu was a leader of exceptional character—detribalised, God-fearing, and committed to unity—who treated all referees equally regardless of background.

 

Mejuobi further revealed that the association is already working on plans to immortalise the late President, alongside other past leaders whose contributions have shaped the NFRA.

 

“We will ensure his name continues to resonate within our association. His legacy in fostering a better refereeing environment in Nigeria will never be forgotten. The NFRA will also maintain a cordial relationship with his family and those of our fallen heroes,” he assured.

 

Responding on behalf of the family, the younger brother of the deceased, Umar Wada Sani, expressed gratitude to the association for its unwavering support before, during, and after Zubairu’s passing.

 

He particularly appreciated members who had remained in Bauchi since Monday, praying for safe journeys as they return to their respective destinations.

 

Dignitaries present at the Fidau prayers included former NFRA President Ahmed Maude, Vice Presidents Emma Imiere and Ibrahim Umar Fagge, as well as key officials such as Suleiman Omezia and Nicholas Achikasim.

 

Other attendees included Anirou Shantali, Muhammad Isa, and Sani Gusau, alongside zonal coordinators, council officials, and referees from across several states and the Federal Capital Territory.

 

Prayers were offered for the repose of Zubairu’s soul, as colleagues, friends, and family reflected on a life dedicated to service, integrity, and the advancement of refereeing in Nigeria.
