The Nigeria Premier Football League has charged Kwara United FC for multiple breaches of its Framework and Rules following incidents that occurred during their Matchday 22 rearranged fixture on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at the Kwara State Stadium in Ilorin.

 

According to the league, Kwara United failed to provide adequate and effective security, which allowed unauthorized individuals to gain access to restricted areas. The club was also found to have failed in ensuring proper conduct of their supporters, leading to the harassment and injury of match officials and officials of Rivers United FC.

 

Supporters of Kwara United reportedly invaded restricted areas and assaulted match officials as well as Rivers United officials, causing bodily harm. The league stated that the supporters’ actions brought the game into disrepute through unsporting behaviour.

 

As a result, the NPFL imposed a series of sanctions on the Ilorin-based club. Kwara United has been fined ₦2 million for failing to provide adequate security and ₦1 million for failing to control their supporters, bringing that subtotal to ₦3 million.

 

The club will also pay ₦2 million for the assault on match officials and Rivers United officials, and an additional ₦1 million for acts capable of bringing the game into disrepute. Furthermore, Kwara United has been fined ₦1 million for holding match officials and Rivers United officials hostage for several hours after the match, as well as ₦2 million as compensation for medical treatment and damages.

 

In addition to the financial penalties totaling ₦12 million, the NPFL has deducted three points and three goals from Kwara United’s accumulated tally for the assaults on match officials.

 

The league also ruled that Kwara United will play their remaining home matches at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta.

 

The club has been directed to identify the supporters involved in the assaults for arrest and prosecution and must provide evidence of compliance.

 

Kwara United has 48 hours from the date of notice to appeal the sanctions.
