NPFL 25: Enugu Rangers Secure Oriental Derby Victory Over Abia Warriors
A stunning free kick from Kazeem Ogunleye in the 59th minute clinched all three points for Enugu Rangers International FC in their Matchday 5 clash of the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium.
The highly anticipated Oriental Derby delivered an exciting match, providing fans with a thrilling experience.
Abia Warriors head coach Imama Amapakabo maintained the lineup that triumphed over Kano Pillars in the previous match, but they were ultimately thwarted by Ogunleye’s brilliant free kick.
The first half ended without goals, as both teams struggled to find their rhythm. However, the introduction of Nenrot Silas at the start of the second half shifted the momentum in favor of Rangers. The dynamic playmaker significantly enhanced the defending champions’ attacking options.
Rangers dominated the early stages of the second half, and their persistence paid off with a free kick just outside the Abia Warriors’ box. Ogunleye stepped up to take it and delivered a perfectly executed shot, igniting wild celebrations among the home fans.
In response, Abia Warriors pushed hard for an equalizer, nearly succeeding in the 73rd minute. A quick corner kick taken by substitute Daniel Ekpo found Paul Sampson, whose effort was parried by the Rangers’ goalkeeper. The ensuing scramble was cleared by the home defense, providing a sigh of relief for the reigning champions.
Despite sustained pressure from Abia Warriors, Rangers held firm defensively, ensuring that the visitors suffered their first away league defeat of the season.
Next, Abia Warriors will face Kwara United FC at home in the Umuahia Township Stadium.
