NNL Matchday 5: ABS Ilorin FC Edge Godswill Akpabio FC 2-1 in Thriller
Abubakar Bukola Saraki (ABS) Ilorin Football Club secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Godswill Akpabio FC in a Nigeria National League (NNL) matchday five clash on Saturday at the Kwara State Stadium Complex, Ilorin.
The Saraki Boys took an early lead in the 16th minute when Jamiu Sa’ad expertly headed in a well-delivered cross from Sani Ramos. Despite sustained pressure from the visitors, ABS held their slim advantage going into halftime.
Godswill Akpabio FC leveled the score in the 63rd minute through Dung Eugene, whose persistence paid off after his team struck the woodwork twice.
However, the home team clinched victory late on when Moshood Olaniyan converted a penalty, sealing the win for ABS Ilorin FC in dramatic fashion.
ABS coach Sani Ahmed Sarduana lauded the visitors for their tactical display, saying:
“I commend Godswill Akpabio FC for their highly tactical approach. Their wingers were mobile, and we had to adjust our strategy to counter them.”
He emphasized the importance of improving game management, adding:
“It’s great to secure the win, but we must focus on finishing games stronger and minimizing concessions.”
With this victory, ABS Ilorin FC moves up to fifth on the NNL standings. Their next challenge will be an away fixture against Osun United on January 18, 2025.
