The Nationwide League One (NLO) has outlined the significant benefits clubs will enjoy following its decision to revert to the traditional home-and-away league format for the 2026 football season.

 

The landmark resolution was reached during the league’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Abuja, where officials confirmed that the home-and-away structure would replace the centralized format beginning from the 2026 campaign. According to the league, the move is aimed at restoring competitiveness and revitalizing the true spirit of grassroots football across the country.

 

In a statement released after the meeting, the NLO noted that the home-and-away format would promote balanced and fair competition, as teams will have equal opportunities to play in familiar environments and host opponents at their own venues or approved designated stadiums. This, the league said, will allow clubs to benefit from home support, which often plays a crucial role in boosting performance and team morale.

 

The league also emphasized the impact the new structure will have on fan engagement. Supporters will once again be able to watch their teams play at home, creating vibrant matchday atmospheres and strengthening the bond between clubs and their local communities.

 

From a financial perspective, the NLO said clubs stand to gain improved revenue streams through gate takings, merchandise sales, and concessions during home fixtures. These opportunities are expected to enhance sponsor and partner visibility, opening doors to stronger commercial relationships and improved long-term sustainability for participating clubs.

 

As preparations begin for the 2026 season, the NLO urged clubs to prioritize effective planning and execution of matchday logistics. This includes ensuring stadium readiness, adequate security arrangements, strict adherence to health and safety protocols, and close coordination with relevant local authorities.

 

The league further noted that clubs will have the autonomy to set gate fees for their home matches, stressing that proper management of ticketing and crowd control will be key to maximizing revenue while ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for fans.

 

Meanwhile, the NLO Secretariat confirmed it will remain responsible for critical aspects of league administration, including referee indemnity, players’ insurance, pre-competition medical examinations, players’ licensing, and overall league operations, all of which will be funded through club registration fees.

 

The league concluded by calling on all clubs to review their operational plans and engage the NLO office for guidance or support where necessary, assuring stakeholders that the return to the home-and-away format will significantly raise the standard of play and contribute meaningfully to the growth of football in Nigeria.
