Njoku Leads Abia Warriors to 3-1 Victory Over Plateau United
Captain Augustine Njoku played a pivotal role in Abia Warriors’ 3-1 comeback win against Plateau United, boosting their position on the league table.
The match, part of Matchday 8 of the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League, took place at Umuahia Township Stadium. Njoku’s leadership was evident as the Pride of Abia secured all three points after initially trailing.
Head coach Imama Amapakabo made three changes to the lineup that lost to Nasarawa United, bringing in Paul Samson, Ojonugwa Adejoh, and Philip Ogwuche for Emmanuel Onu, Nicholas Jonathan, and Isaac Afolabi.
The Warriors dominated the early stages and nearly scored in the second minute, but Daniel Ekpo’s shot from a dangerous cross by Samson went narrowly wide. Philip Ewuga squandered another opportunity shortly after, shooting over from close range.
Despite controlling the game, Abia found themselves down 1-0 in the 39th minute due to a defensive error that allowed Adamu Abubakar to score for Plateau United. Instead of being discouraged, the Warriors responded fiercely, with Njoku leading the charge.
Just before halftime, Njoku set up the equalizer, passing to Ojonugwa Adejoh, who then assisted Sunday Megwo, who scored with an acrobatic finish.
Four minutes later, Njoku’s influence was felt again. He made a powerful run, evaded tackles, and passed to Ojonugwa, whose shot found the net, giving Abia a 2-1 lead at the break.
Plateau United made three substitutions at halftime, hoping to turn the tide. However, it was Abia that extended their lead in the 56th minute. Paul Samson, assisted by Ojonugwa, cut into the box and fired a stunning shot to make it 3-1, sealing the victory for the Warriors.
The team held firm in defense to maintain their lead and secure the win.
