The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), H.E. Comrade Philip Shaibu, has once again congratulated Nigeria’s Super Falcons for their “superlative performance” in the finals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where they staged a stunning 3–2 comeback victory against host nation Morocco.

Shaibu, the immediate past Deputy Governor of Edo State and a former Bendel Insurance Football Club player, said the Falcons’ triumph had “once again etched their name in African football history,” as the team claimed an unprecedented 10th WAFCON title, further cementing their legacy as the most dominant side on the continent.

The NIS boss, who fulfilled his promise to travel to Morocco to cheer the Nigerian ladies, was in attendance at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, where the Falcons overturned a two-goal deficit to silence the Moroccan crowd in a dramatic finale.

Shaibu praised not only the players but also those who worked behind the scenes to make the victory possible.

“This achievement is a testament to the commitment of the players, the technical crew of the Super Falcons, and the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation,” Shaibu said. “I must also commend the Mallam Shehu Dikko-led National Sports Commission for their role in achieving the set target of Mission X.”

The historic win marks Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON title, an extraordinary milestone that underscores the Super Falcons’ dominance and resilience in African women’s football.

With the trophy now back in Nigerian hands, Shaibu called for continued investment and support for women’s football, noting that the Falcons’ success “inspires a new generation of girls across the country to dream big and achieve greatness.”
