Former Governor of Edo State and Professor of Law, Oserheimen Osunbor, has raised alarm over the current state of governance in Nigeria, warning that the country is at risk of democratic collapse due to poor leadership and deepening public disillusionment.

Speaking during a brief handover ceremony in Abuja where he officially took over as Legal Adviser of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Osunbor described the situation in Nigeria as dire, accusing the APC-led federal government of misleading the people and plunging the nation into poverty and insecurity.

“Our democracy is under serious threat,” Osunbor declared. “Everywhere people are disillusioned… the nation is under threat of disintegration. Nigerians are looking up to ADC to rescue them from the unfortunate situation we now find ourselves in.”

The handover was conducted by outgoing Legal Adviser Peter Oyewole, whom Osunbor praised for his efforts in ensuring a smooth coalition process and compliance with party protocols. He emphasized that Oyewole’s experience and institutional memory would remain vital to the party’s progress.

Osunbor, now a key figure in the ADC’s national leadership, painted a bleak picture of Nigeria’s current socio-political climate, citing widespread poverty, insecurity, and disenchantment as symptoms of failed leadership.

“We are not in this race simply to remove APC from power as if they are conquerors of Nigerians,” he said. “We offer credible leadership. Government must cater to the welfare, well-being, and security of the people, which is now very lacking.”

He called on legal professionals, party stakeholders, and all well-meaning Nigerians to rally behind the ADC, which he described as a “beacon of hope” for the country.

“We know that Nigerians are suffering… the wealth and resources of Nigeria must go to the benefit of Nigerians, not a few,” Osunbor stressed.

He concluded with a call for unity and purposeful leadership, pledging that the ADC would work to restore faith in the democratic process and usher in a people-centered government by 2027.
