Nigeria’s dominance in women’s wrestling continued on the global stage as four athletes claimed gold medals at the NAIA Women’s Wrestling National Championships in the United States.

 

The quartet delivered an outstanding performance at the collegiate tournament, which featured over 210 wrestlers competing across 10 weight categories.

 

Leading the medal sweep was Christinah Ogunsanya in the 117 lbs division. She showcased exceptional technical ability and experience throughout the competition to emerge champion, earning NAIA National Champion status and All-American honours.

 

Jumoke Adekoye followed suit in the 131 lbs category, demonstrating tactical discipline and resilience to secure another gold medal for Nigeria.

 

In the 138 lbs division, Esther Kolawole delivered a commanding performance, using her international experience to dominate opponents. She also led the tournament in technical falls, underlining her superiority.

 

Completing the golden haul was Mercy Adekuoroye in the 160 lbs category. The younger sister of wrestling icon Odunayo Adekuoroye displayed composure and tactical awareness to clinch victory in a crucial final bout.

 

Reacting to the athletes’ success, Nigerian women’s national team coach Akuh Purity praised their achievements, noting that their performances highlight the growing influence of Nigerian wrestlers in the United States collegiate system.

 

He emphasized that the victories not only earned the athletes All-American recognition but also brought pride to their universities, the Nigerian government, and the Nigeria Wrestling Federation.

 

Purity attributed the success to the leadership of the federation’s president, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, commending his strategic investment in talent identification and development.

 

He added that the achievements represent a significant milestone for African participation in NAIA wrestling and form part of Nigeria’s preparation framework ahead of the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.

 

The historic feat further cements Nigeria’s growing reputation as a powerhouse in women’s wrestling on the international stage.
