The Nigerian Army has decorated 28 senior officers with new ranks, with the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (Rtd), calling on them to justify their elevation through deeper loyalty, professionalism and unwavering service to the nation.

 

The decoration ceremony, held at the Army Headquarters Command Officers’ Mess 1, Asokoro, Abuja, saw 28 Brigadier Generals promoted to the rank of Major General, including one officer honoured posthumously.

 

General Musa, who served as the Special Guest of Honour, commended the officers for their courage, years of sacrifice and exceptional contributions to national security. He noted that their promotion reflects their steadfast commitment to safeguarding the nation, urging them to approach emerging security challenges with renewed determination.

 

“These officers are among the finest leaders in our Armed Forces,” he said, expressing pride in their achievements and emphasizing their strategic role in shaping the future of the Nigerian Army. He further highlighted the importance of enhanced inter-service cooperation, improved intelligence sharing and synergy among security agencies.

 

The Minister acknowledged the invaluable support of the officers’ families and reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to improving welfare and operational capacity across the military. He also conveyed the felicitations of the President and Commander-in-Chief, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, assuring that the administration will continue to invest in strengthening the Armed Forces.

 

Earlier, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, described the event as a milestone celebrating officers who have demonstrated integrity, competence and loyalty. He reaffirmed that the Nigerian Army operates a merit-driven and transparent promotion system, adding that promotion remains a powerful motivator for excellence.

 

General Shaibu also outlined ongoing initiatives to enhance personnel welfare, including improved healthcare, upgraded infrastructure and a more conducive environment for operational efficiency. He noted that the elevation of the officers underscores confidence in their ability to assume greater responsibilities both within Nigeria and on international assignments.

 

Speaking on behalf of the newly promoted officers, Major General Francis Omata expressed deep appreciation to President Tinubu for approving their promotions. He pledged unwavering loyalty and dedication to national service, while commending the Minister of Defence and the Chief of Army Staff for their exemplary leadership and mentorship.

 

The ceremony drew several high-profile dignitaries, including former President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, the Minister of State for Finance, members of the National Assembly, Service Chiefs, the Inspector General of Police, former Service Chiefs, principal staff officers from Defence and Service Headquarters, Corps Commanders, Commandants of military training institutions and the President of the Nigerian Army Officers Wives Association.
