The Super Eagles of Nigeria were left frustrated after a 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in their latest FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifying match. Despite dominating possession and creating multiple scoring opportunities, the Nigerian side was unable to secure the much-needed victory.

Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), reflected on the result, describing it as a “rude shock” given Nigeria’s overwhelming control of the game. According to Dikko, the team registered over 42 attacking plays inside the opponent’s box and created more than 10 clear chances—any of which could have secured a win on another day.

While the draw was not the result Nigeria had hoped for, Dikko commended the players and the technical crew, led by Eric Chelle, for their effort and commitment. He emphasized that the team’s performances during this qualification window demonstrated significant progress and provided hope for the future.

Despite the setback, Nigeria remains in contention for World Cup qualification. Dikko stressed that winning the next four matches would likely secure the Super Eagles a spot in the tournament. He pointed out that the team’s current position, based on competition rules and FIFA’s disciplinary code, still leaves room for qualification.

“The team will remain focused on the mission, with eyes firmly on the ball until the very end,” he assured.

The Nigerian government, through the NSC and in collaboration with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has taken steps to ensure stability within the team. A revised remuneration and bonus structure was agreed upon for the remainder of the qualifiers, with players receiving their payments promptly.

In a further show of support, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recently approved the fast-tracking of land and housing allocations in Abuja, which had been promised to the team last year. This move, according to Dikko, reflects the government’s commitment to sports development and to motivating the players.
Looking ahead, Nigeria’s football authorities are planning a training camp and three friendly matches in June 2025 to fine-tune the squad ahead of the qualifiers resuming in September.

Dikko expressed gratitude to fans for their unwavering support, urging them to continue backing the team as they push towards securing a place at the 2026 World Cup.

“All being equal, the final outcome will surely repay the fans with the desired World Cup ticket,” he concluded.

With the Super Eagles still in the hunt, attention now turns to their next set of fixtures as they seek to bounce back and make their mark on the road to FIFA World Cup 2026.
