President of the Nigeria Hockey Federation, Simon Nkom, has expressed strong confidence in the upward trajectory of hockey in the country, citing notable achievements and growing momentum in recent years.

Speaking during a media briefing in Abuja, Nkom highlighted the sport’s impressive progress despite limited sponsorship, proudly stating that hockey is now ranked among Nigeria’s top 10 sports — a feat made possible through focused development and a committed board.

“Our clubs now consistently reach the medal stages at the African Cup for Club Championships. In 2024 alone, we had five teams — three women’s and two men’s — compete. That’s a huge leap forward,” he noted.

He also announced that preparations are well underway for the 2025 league season, which kicks off in August, with an increased number of clubs confirming participation — a clear sign of growing interest and confidence in the federation.

Nkom further pointed to encouraging international results, including Nigeria’s bronze medal at the 2022 Africa Hockey Nations Cup, and silver and bronze medals at the 2023 African Games by the men’s and women’s teams, respectively. He praised the youth teams for maintaining consistency, adding that Nigeria’s men’s team recently featured at the FIH Hockey5s World Cup in Oman, following a second-place finish in the African qualifiers.

Looking ahead to the 2025 Africa Hockey Nations Cup in Egypt, Nkom expressed hope that the national teams will surpass their previous records.

He also commended the Federal Government and the National Sports Commission for their growing support of Nigerian sports, calling this “one of the best times” for athletes and federations alike.

On his future as president, Nkom said he would only seek re-election if stakeholders in the hockey community believe he should continue.

“Our results are visible. I’ll consult with the board and stakeholders before deciding on the next step,” he said.
