Vice President of the World Karate Federation (WKF), Bachir Cherif, recently visited Nigeria to assess the country’s preparedness to host the inaugural Union of African Karate Championship, scheduled for July 22nd to 27th, 2025, in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

 

Cherif was warmly received by key stakeholders including the Vice Chairperson of the World Karate Championship (WKC), board members of the Nigeria Karate Federation, and its President, Hon. Silas Agara. Also present were Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Alh. Shehu Dikko, and Director General, Hon. Bukola Olapade.

 

The visit included a courtesy call on top sports officials and an inspection tour of the facilities set to host the continental event. Among the approved venues were the MKO Abiola National Stadium, its Gymnasium, and surrounding accommodation facilities—both within and outside the stadium premises.

 

The championship, endorsed by the WKF, marks Nigeria’s debut as host of a major African Karate event. It aligns with the Federal Government’s broader strategy to grow the sports sector as a contributor to national GDP, as well as the Sports Commission’s mission to promote youth engagement through international sporting events.

 

With over 50 African nations expected to participate, the event is seen as a gateway to attract more international competitions to Nigeria. It’s also an opportunity to showcase sports as a tool for economic and social development, while encouraging other federations to explore bilateral partnerships and global exposure.

 

Karate has been identified as one of Nigeria’s key medal-winning sports at international championships. The Nigeria Karate Federation is also applauded for its inclusivity, with both male and female referees representing the country in administrative and political sporting platforms.

 

Hon. Silas Agara’s dedication to karate, echoed by Alh. Shehu Dikko’s visionary sports leadership, has earned the federation commendations both locally and internationally. The Sports Commission has further assured continued support to federations with developmental plans, promising access to modern equipment for athlete training.

 

The call was made for Nigerian media to amplify the country’s positive image in sports, reinforcing its reputation as a secure and welcoming host for future international competitions.
