The build-up to the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF) elections has been marked by protests and confusion, with some candidates initially disqualified only to be cleared hours later.

Former NCF President, Emeka Onyeama, speaking on the situation, maintained that his priority remains getting back on the board of the federation.

"I can’t help the growth of the game if I’m outside. I need to be on the board to effect change, and that’s what I’m working toward, regardless of these distractions," Onyeama said. "We remain focused on driving grassroots development and attracting private sector support."

Onyeama congratulated the newly elected athletes’ and technical representatives but stressed that the real work begins now.

"Everybody must pull their weight to take cricket to the next level. We must move beyond competitions and focus on grassroots growth. One of my priorities is to extend the development of the game to universities because we need more undergraduates involved," he explained.

He also highlighted the need for stronger digital engagement to promote the sport: "We must improve our presence on TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and most importantly, live streaming our games."

Onyeama concluded with optimism, stating that despite the turbulence, the election is an opportunity to reposition cricket in Nigeria for sustainable growth.
