The Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA) has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for directing the immediate reopening of the Samiya International Border in Kebbi State, which links Nigeria with the Republic of Benin.

 

The association described the directive as a timely and forward-looking policy move capable of boosting cross-border trade, strengthening regional economic cooperation, and reviving legitimate economic activities along the corridor.

 

The presidential order was announced during an official visit by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, to the Nigeria Customs Service Area Command in Birnin Kebbi.

 

In a statement, NACCIMA noted that the reopening of the border is backed by stronger compliance measures, including the deployment of modern cargo monitoring technology, improved transit controls, and strict directives against smuggling and regulatory abuse.

 

According to the association, the emphasis on faster cargo clearance timelines and coordinated inter-agency oversight reflects a balanced approach that supports trade facilitation while also protecting national security and revenue interests.

 

“NACCIMA notes with appreciation that the reopening of the border is accompanied by strengthened compliance measures, the deployment of modern cargo monitoring technology, improved transit controls, and firm directives against smuggling and regulatory abuse,” the statement said.

 

NACCIMA further highlighted the wide-ranging developmental benefits of functional and well-regulated border posts, especially for border community livelihoods, agricultural and commodity value chains, small and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs), informal sector traders, regional food security, ECOWAS trade integration, and social and cultural exchange.

 

The association said the reopening of the Samiya International Border sends a strong policy signal that regulated, technology-driven border operations can promote economic growth, enhance competitiveness, and protect national interests at the same time.

 

NACCIMA reaffirmed its commitment to working with government agencies and other stakeholders to ensure that the policy leads to sustainable trade expansion, inclusive economic growth, and stronger regional cooperation.
