Grief has gripped the Ogbunike community in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State following the sudden and shocking death of Dr. Chuma-Harris Odili, a beloved son of the soil, popularly known as Eze Ogbono, Ogene Ogbunike, and Ogene Igbo.

 

Odili, a revered Nollywood veteran, culture promoter, journalist, and public relations expert, collapsed and died on Friday, August 23, 2025, just hours after attending a public event hosted by his rival in the race for the Igwe (traditional ruler) stool of Ogbunike — a position he was himself contesting following the demise of the community’s former monarch.

 

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred while Odili was exchanging pleasantries at the event. As some women approached him while dancing, he stepped forward to spray money — a cultural gesture of appreciation — then stepped back and suddenly slumped. He was quickly rushed to a nearby hospital and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), but he was pronounced dead hours later.

 

The news sent shockwaves through the community and beyond, especially coming just a day after Odili posted a message of peace and unity on social media — a message now viewed as eerily symbolic and prophetic.

Dr. Odili was widely respected for his unwavering commitment to Igbo culture, media activism, and grassroots mobilization. As Founder of the Anambra Core Media Advocates, he championed the cause of cultural preservation and civic education, and remained a fearless advocate for social justice and community development.

 

His family confirmed his passing in a heartfelt statement released on Saturday:

“With deep sorrow but total submission to the will of the Almighty and our ancestors, we announce the transition of our illustrious son, father, brother, community leader, and custodian of culture, Eze Odinana Ogbunike, Dr. Harris Udokama Chuma-Odili (Ogene Ogbunike), who joined his ancestors on 23rd August, 2025.”

 

“As we mourn this irreplaceable loss, we also celebrate his remarkable life of service, cultural stewardship, and commitment to truth, justice, and community upliftment. We humbly request your prayers, solidarity, and support. Further details regarding the traditional and funeral arrangements shall be communicated in due course.”

His legacy as a unifying figure in Ogbunike and across Anambra State continues to resonate, especially among youth groups, filmmakers, and community development advocates.

 

Dr. Chuma-Harris Odili is survived by family members, friends, mentees, and an entire community that now mourns not just a leader, but a cultural giant whose life’s work will not be forgotten.
