Monday Okpebholo has officially assumed office as the Governor of Edo State, succeeding Godwin Obaseki, whose administration led the South-South state for the past eight years. The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, the state’s capital, and marked the start of a new chapter under Okpebholo’s leadership. His running mate, Dennis Idahosa, also took the oath of office as Deputy Governor.

The inauguration follows the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the recent gubernatorial election, where Okpebholo won against Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party.

Philip Shaibu, former Deputy Governor of Edo State, expressed his joy and pride at witnessing the peaceful transition. In a statement posted on social media, Shaibu said, “Today, November 12, 2024, marks a historic milestone for Edo State. I am honored to witness the swearing-in of His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, and Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa. Your leadership will undoubtedly inspire future generations, and I wish you wisdom, good health, and unwavering dedication as you begin this journey.” Shaibu also thanked the people of Edo for their support during his eight-year tenure, adding that their resilience and trust empowered his administration.

As part of his first executive actions, Governor Okpebholo has approved the immediate dissolution of all boards, agencies, and parastatals in the Edo State public service. The announcement, made on Wednesday in a statement by Chief Press Secretary Fred Itua, further disclosed that all permanent secretaries appointed from outside the state’s civil service, along with other political appointees, have been relieved of their duties. All affected officials are instructed to hand over state property in their possession to the most senior public officer in their respective departments.

Additionally, Governor Okpebholo has indefinitely suspended the collection of all state revenues, including those collected at motor parks. He directed the State Commissioner of Police to enforce this suspension and arrest any individual found collecting state revenues. “The collection of revenues in Edo State is suspended until further notice,” the governor stated. “The Commissioner of Police is ordered to detain anyone who violates this directive.”

The Governor plans to thoroughly review the revenue collection issues and will provide updated guidance soon.
