In a momentous recognition of exemplary leadership, unwavering integrity, discipline, promotion of fair play and true sportsmanship, as well as dedication to fostering national unity, the All-Federal Capital Territory Sports Association (AFSA) has conferred its prestigious "Ambassador of Fair Play" award on the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd.) OFR. The award was presented during a high-profile courtesy visit to the Ministry of Defence at Ship House, Abuja. Leading the delegation was Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, former Speaker of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the AFSA Board of Trustiest. Hon. Yakubu Dogara commended the Minister for his deep passion for sports and youth development, describing these as essential drivers of security and stability in any nation. He emphasized the visit's goal: to strengthen collaboration between AFSA and the Ministry, elevating sports in the Federal Capital Territory to world-class levels that promote economic independence, empower youth, curb restiveness, and build lasting peace—mirroring achievements in advanced economies.  HRM Sir Eze Ifeanyi Eke, President of AFSA, personally decorated the Minister (represented by the Permanent Secretary) with a symbol gold medal. He passionately appealed for the revival of barracks schools as breeding grounds for talent, noting that the Nigerian Army has historically produced medal-winning athletes representing the nation. Such initiatives, he said, would unlock immense potential in Nigeria's sports sector and contribute significantly to national development. Mr. Agbor Clinton, Director General of AFSA, highlighted the association's mission to make fair play a household campaign for peace, unity, and economic progress across Nigeria. He explained that the award was carefully selected to honor the Minister and the Ministry's renowned discipline—exemplified by the Nigerian Army's values—which align perfectly with AFSA's vision of using sports as a tool for positive societal transformation. The event's highlight included the presentation of three separate inspirational books by Dr. Jumai Ahmed, AFSA's Director of Female Sports Development and Chairperson of the FCT Gymnastics Association. Dr. Ahmed affirmed that these publications, if widely adopted, would deliver immense benefits to athletes, coaches, administrators, and the broader sports community. Representing the Honourable Minister, Mr. Richard Pheelangwa, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, expressed deep appreciation for the gesture. He described the award as a clear testament to Gen. Musa's steadfast commitment to sports development nationwide. The Permanent Secretary reaffirmed the Minister's enthusiasm for sports (including active participation in indoor and outdoor activities such as golf) and pledged ongoing support for initiatives that harness sports to promote national cohesion, youth empowerment, and security. This honour underscores the vital intersection of defence, discipline, and sports in building a stronger, more united Nigeria.
