The Middle Belt Forum (MBF) has expressed confidence in former presidential candidate Peter Obi’s pledge to serve only one term if elected president, describing him as a man of integrity who honours his commitments.

 

Speaking to newsmen, MBF National President, Dr. Bitrus Pogu, said the forum had no reason to doubt Obi’s sincerity, stressing that his track record as a leader demonstrated his commitment to keeping promises.

 

“We believe Peter Obi is a man of honour and we believe that if he gets the win and he promises or promised something, he will keep to it,” Pogu stated. “This assurance was not given to hoodwink or deceive the Middle Belt into supporting his aspiration.”

 

Clarifying that he was speaking solely for the Middle Belt and not the wider northern region, Pogu noted that while constitutional provisions and the electorate should ideally determine the length of a leader’s tenure, the forum accepted Obi’s word in good faith.

 

“But like I have always said, we are where we are because we are not yet a nation. That is why several factors have continued to hold us back from attaining the dreams of our founding fathers,” he said. “For now, as a people, we believe Peter Obi because we know he is a man of integrity and honour who keeps his words.”

 

Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, has repeatedly maintained that if given the mandate, he would serve a single term in order to lay a strong governance foundation before handing over.
