Maureen Mmadu To Receive SWAN Diamond Jubilee National Award
Former Nigerian international and Super Falcons legend, Maureen Mmadu, is set to be honoured with the prestigious Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Diamond Jubilee National Award.
The honour celebrates the national pride and glory Mmadu brought to Nigeria through her illustrious football career and her continued contributions to the development of the game, particularly through the Maureen Mmadu Football Academy.
In a letter dated October 10, 2025, the SWAN Secretary-General, Ambassador Ikenna Okonkwo, officially notified Mmadu of her nomination.
“I am pleased to inform you that you have been nominated as a recipient of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Diamond Jubilee National Award,” the letter read.
“The conferment is in recognition of the national pride and glory you brought to your fatherland. Nigerian sports writers owe it to thank you for making Nigeria great through sports.”
The award ceremony is scheduled to take place at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abuja, on October 31, 2025, at 1 p.m.
Founded in 1964, SWAN is a key body representing sports journalists across Nigeria. It is also affiliated with the Association Internationale De La Presse Sportive (AIPS) and the African Sports Journalists Union (ASJU).
Mmadu, Nigeria’s first female footballer to make 100 international appearances, remains one of the most accomplished players in African women’s football history. Her recognition by SWAN underscores her enduring legacy both on and off the pitch.
