The Federal Government don clear air say Mathematics still dey compulsory for every student wey wan write Senior School Certificate Examinations (SSCE), no matter the course dem wan pursue for university.

 

This statement come from the Federal Ministry of Education on Sunday, through dia spokesperson Boriowo Folashade, as many people don dey carry rumour say Mathematics no dey important again, especially for students wey dey go study arts and humanities.

 

“All students must continue to register and sit for English Language and Mathematics in their O-Level examinations,” na wetin the statement talk.

 

This clarification come just one week after social media scatter with tori say some students no go need Mathematics again for admission.

 

Folashade talk say the new policy na to help more people enter university, not to remove core subjects like English and Maths. She explain say some courses fit accept students even if dem no get credit for Mathematics or English, but dem must still write am for exam.

 

“This adjustment affects only the admission criteria, not the requirement to take these subjects,” she add.

 

She describe English and Mathematics as “important tools for communication, sense-making, and lifelong learning.”

 

She beg students, parents, and school people make dem no dey believe fake news, and instead, make dem always confirm information from government official channels.

 

When dem ask her if this new statement mean say government don change dia mind, Folashade talk say:

 

“No be U-turn. Na just proper explanation make people understand wetin we mean. Our goal na to help more students get access to higher education.”
