Lawal Nets Again as NK Istra Clash with Rijeka Is Abandoned
There is no denying the fact that Salim Fago Lawal, former Flying Eagles striker, is in terrific form in Europe after scoring yet another goal for NK Istra in their Croatian elite league encounter against Rijeka on Sunday.
The pacy forward, renowned for his lethal movement inside the box, struck early in the encounter. Lawal pounced like a predator in the 5th minute after Rijeka’s goalkeeper failed to punch the ball to safety. Showing sharp striker’s instinct, he reacted quickest, beat a defender to the loose ball, and calmly slotted it into the net.
Rijeka, however, proved a hard nut to crack as the lead lasted just four minutes before they restored parity. Despite the equaliser, NK Istra, buoyed by home support, continued to show more purpose and determination, with Lawal constantly lurking around the opponents’ vital area in search of another goal.
Play was eventually halted in the first half as weather conditions deteriorated badly, with thick fog forcing the abandonment of the match.
Irrespective of the game not reaching its conclusion, the former Mavlon FC attacker signed off in style, taking his season tally to seven goals. Attention now shifts to international duty for Lawal, who has been named in the 28-man Super Eagles squad currently in Egypt for the African football fiesta.
