Lagos State Football Association Makes Headline
The Lagos State Football Association (LSFA), under the leadership of Alhaji Gafar Liameed, has made headlines by appearing on the front page of The Punch newspaper on September 23, 2024. This unprecedented coverage highlights the association's Annual General Assembly and its ambitious budget of ₦3.6 billion for the 2024/2025 football season, a first for any state football association in Nigeria.
The budget, which aims at fostering grassroots football, referees' education, and coaching development, is seen as a major step in advancing the sport in Lagos State. Alhaji Gafar Liameed emphasized the significance of transparency and building trust as essential elements in attracting corporate sponsors to support the state's football initiatives. He reiterated that Lagos is committed to developing the next generation of Nigerian football talent through well-structured programs.
The LSFA plans to execute 19 football competitions, each with a budget of ₦100 million. These competitions include prestigious events such as the Lagos Federation Cup, Lagos State Football League, Ibile Cup, Lagos Youth League, Freshers Cup, Lagos State Queens Championship, Oba's Cup, Lagos Beach Soccer Cup, and the Principal's Cup, among others. This strategic investment in football is expected to boost talent development and elevate the sport in the state.
