The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken a swipe at opposition parties in Nigeria, accusing them of lacking vision, ideological coherence, and seriousness as the nation moves toward the 2027 general elections.

 

In a strongly worded statement issued on Tuesday, APC spokesperson Seye Oladejo described Nigeria’s opposition as “a coalition of desperation, confusion, and hypocrisy”, warning that their current trajectory poses a threat to the country’s democratic health.

 

“Rather than serve as credible watchdogs, policy challengers, or intellectual counterweights to the ruling party, the opposition has degenerated into a coalition of desperation,” Oladejo said.

 

He expressed concern over the deteriorating quality of opposition politics, saying that “the absence of a strong and credible opposition is unhealthy for Nigeria’s democracy.”

 

Oladejo argued that true democratic vibrancy depends on a serious and principled opposition, citing the era of President Bola Tinubu’s time in opposition as a model of constructive and visionary engagement.

 

“When President Tinubu was in opposition, he built a coalition based on principles, ideas, and structure. He offered Nigerians a credible alternative founded on progressivism, good governance, and national unity,” he added.

 

Taking aim at the current crop of opposition leaders, Oladejo accused many of abandoning ideological principles in pursuit of personal ambition and media attention.

 

“Individuals who once claimed to stand for ideological purity now leapfrog from one platform to another. The opposition’s moral compass has been completely eroded,” he said.

 

He warned that the failure of opposition parties to present coherent policy alternatives on issues like the economy, security, and social development is eroding public trust and engagement in the political process.

 

“Democracy thrives on choice – and when one side of the political divide consistently fails to evolve, citizens naturally disengage from the process,” he noted.

 

According to Oladejo, President Tinubu’s administration, through its Renewed Hope Agenda, continues to implement “tough but necessary reforms” to rebuild the economy and restore national pride, contrasting sharply with what he called the opposition’s “noise without substance.”

 

He concluded by warning that the fragmentation and incoherence of the opposition could lead to long-term damage to Nigeria’s democratic development.

 

“Unfortunately, what we have today is a fragmented assemblage of self-appointed messiahs and expired politicians who mistake social media noise for national relevance,” Oladejo stated.

 

The statement is the latest in a growing war of words as political alignments and realignments intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.
