The Labour Party Senate Caucus has issued a scathing condemnation of Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo for threatening to restrict former presidential candidate Peter Obi’s access to the state. The caucus described the governor’s comments as “executive lawlessness and impudence,” warning that such remarks violate constitutional rights and threaten national unity.

 

In a statement jointly signed by Senators Victor Umeh, Ireti Kingibe, Ezea Okey, and Tony Nwoye, the caucus cited Section 41(1) of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees all Nigerians the right to freedom of movement and expression. They said Governor Okpebholo’s threat to deny Obi security if he enters the state without prior permission was an affront to democracy and a dangerous abuse of power.

 

“Peter Obi, like every Nigerian, has a constitutional right to move freely within the country,” the senators said. “The governor’s remarks are not only unconstitutional but also reckless and a direct threat to Obi’s personal safety.”

 

The controversy stems from Obi’s recent visit to Edo, where he reportedly donated N15 million to a nursing school. Speaking days later at a political event in Uromi on July 18, 2025, Governor Okpebholo accused Obi’s visit of coinciding with violence in the state and implied future visits would require his approval.

 

The Labour Caucus described the governor’s remarks as “an attempt to criminalize philanthropy,” and called on the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Director General of the DSS, Adeola Ajayi, to investigate the threat and ensure Obi’s safety.

 

They also demanded that Governor Okpebholo retract his statement and issue a public apology to Obi and Nigerians “for violating the very Constitution he swore to uphold.”

 

“Peter Obi is a symbol of democratic values and a respected voice for development. He deserves protection, not persecution,” the statement read.

 

The senators warned that unchecked executive overreach could undermine peace and stability in the country and called on all political leaders to uphold democratic principles and the rule of law.
