Nigeria’s Kada Queens Hockey Team has made history by clinching the bronze medal at the 25th Women’s Africa Cup for Club Champions (ACCC) in Ismailia, Egypt. The team returned home on Monday, arriving at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, to a warm reception from hockey enthusiasts.

 

The Kaduna-based team secured their podium finish with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Kenya’s Mombasa in a thrilling match. Finishing second in Group B with three wins from four games, Kada Queens advanced to the knockout phase, where they displayed resilience and skill.

 

Meanwhile, their male counterparts, Kada Stars, faced a tougher challenge and could not secure a medal. However, player James Smalia emerged as the tournament’s highest goal scorer, offering a silver lining for the team.

 

Speaking on the team’s performance, head coach Abdullahi Babagana expressed mixed emotions, acknowledging the challenges they faced. “We aimed for gold but settled for bronze. The journey, the weather, and the tight schedule tested us. However, we are grateful for the experience and will return stronger next year,” he said.

 

Team captain John Alfa Cornelius echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that their late arrival impacted their performance. “Bronze wasn’t our target, but we appreciate the result. Next time, better preparation will help us achieve more,” she stated.

 

Other Nigerian clubs in the women’s category, Delta Queens and Plateau Queens, finished third and fourth in their respective groups. Despite challenges, the Kada Queens’ achievement marks a significant milestone for Nigerian hockey on the continental stage.
