Kabiru Popoola’s Penalty Seals Gateway United’s Year-End Win Over Calabar Rovers
Kabiru Popoola’s decisive penalty ensured Gateway United ended the year on a high note with a 1-0 victory over Calabar Rovers in their Nigeria National League (NNL) clash at the Gateway International Stadium, Ilaro.
Coach Festus Allen made key changes to his lineup, including the introductions of Lekan Abdulsalam, Olufemi Famuyiwa, and Lekan Adeleye. The match began with both sides demonstrating solid defensive organization, but Gateway created the first big chance in the 7th minute. Samuel Christian’s clever chip was heroically cleared off the line by Rovers defender Johnson Emmanuel.
The breakthrough came in the 32nd minute when Lekan Abdulsalam was fouled in the box. Kabiru Popoola stepped up and converted the resulting penalty with composure, giving Gateway a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
After the break, Gateway faced a renewed push from Calabar Rovers. Raheem Ibrahim, replacing the injured Titioso Idris in goal, made a vital save in the 55th minute, tipping Amos Okoro’s powerful strike over the bar. Despite several missed opportunities to extend their lead—including close efforts by Famuyiwa and Fadipe—Gateway’s defense stood firm under late pressure from the visitors.
The hard-fought victory earned Gateway United their first win in three matches, capping off the year with a morale-boosting result.
Coach’s Reaction
Coach Festus Allen praised his team’s performance but lamented their missed chances.
“It was a good game, but the low scoreline doesn’t reflect the flow of the match. I’m thrilled with the win, at least as a parting gift to our fans for the end of the year. For 2025, expect a rebirth,” Allen said.
Next Fixture
Gateway United will kick off 2025 with an away game against Sporting Lagos at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on January 5th.
