Nollywood actress Judy Austin, second wife of actor Yul Edochie, has shared strong opinions on the dangers of early marriage, urging young women not to rush into matrimony until they are fully mentally and emotionally prepared.

 

Speaking during a TikTok live session, the mother of four described it as “totally wrong” for girls below 20 to be pushed into marriage when even older, more experienced adults often struggle to sustain theirs.

 

Drawing from personal experience, Judy highlighted the negative consequences of marrying too early — including high divorce rates, emotional trauma, and the challenges of single parenting.

 

“If a girl is in her early twenties or under 18 or 20, why are we allowing them to get married?” she questioned.

 

Sharing her opinion on the ideal age for marriage, the actress said 25 is suitable for women, while men should wait until at least 30.

 

She also warned young women against marrying solely because of pregnancy.

 

“Do not marry a man just because you are pregnant for him. You will regret it. The first question you should ask is: can I spend the rest of my life with this guy? This guy that behaves like this — can I really love and roll with him? You can’t make that decision if you’re still a child or not mentally ready,” she said.

 

Austin encouraged young women to focus on personal growth and independence before marriage.

 

“Date people. Learn people. Understand that you can’t trust anybody except yourself and God. Show up for yourself before expecting anyone to show up for you,” she advised.

 

She added that maturity and self-awareness are key to building a strong relationship:

 

“Grow. Work. Gain the shock absorber you need. When you’re ready, pray to God for the right person. And even if it doesn’t work out, don’t regret it.”

 

Concluding her remarks, Judy expressed concern over the lasting damage caused by early marriages in society.

 

“Early marriage has damaged a lot of us. Many people are divorced or struggling to raise children they weren’t ready for. Some women even disappear after giving birth. It’s heartbreaking,” she said.

 

Her message has since sparked mixed reactions online, with many praising her for speaking truthfully about the realities of marriage and maturity.
