Veteran long-distance runner Joy Ebiye emerged as the winner of the 9th Lagos Women Run, marking her third title and second consecutive win in this annual 10km race. Ebiye outpaced over 10,000 female participants, clocking in at 39:35:21 to take the title again, though her time was slightly slower than her previous year’s record of 33:41:4.

The Lagos Women Run, held on Saturday, kicked off at 7:00 a.m. at Tafawa Balewa Square and concluded at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena. Athletes traversed a scenic route across Lagos Island and Victoria Island.

Ebiye, an officer with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and a native of Okitipupa, Ondo State, previously won the race in 2021. Following her in this year’s race were Cameroon’s Lizine Nguetsa, who finished second with a time of 40:02:54, and Charity Agofure, who placed third with 40:09:23.

In the Veteran Category, 46-year-old Janet Dung from Plateau State clinched first place with a time of 47:45, while Latvian runner Katrine Darare took second place with 52:56. Otonye Iworima completed the podium in third place with 64:50.

The Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), Lekan Fatodu, praised the participants, highlighting the race’s role in bringing together strong, inspirational women and fostering community spirit across Lagos. He added that the event aligns with the state’s commitment to promoting fitness and sports entertainment.

Ebiye received a cash prize of N1.5 million, with Nguetsa taking home N1 million and Agofure N500,000. Veteran winner Dung was awarded N300,000, while Darare and Iworima received N200,000 and N100,000, respectively.
