Jessica Oji made an immediate statement in her first competition representing Nigeria, delivering a strong second-place finish in the women’s shot put at the Tiger Paw Invitational in Clemson.

 

The powerful thrower, who recently switched her sporting allegiance from the United States to Nigeria, recorded a best mark of 17.74m to secure a podium finish in her debut under the Nigerian flag. Her performance announced her arrival as one of the country’s most exciting field-event prospects.

 

Oji’s transition adds depth to Nigeria’s growing throws programme, and her opening outing suggests there is more to come as the season progresses.

 

Closing in on African History

 

The 18.45m personal best she achieved prior to her switch places her within striking distance of continental history. That mark is two centimetres beyond the long-standing African record of 18.43m set by former Nigerian star Vivian Chukwuemeka.
