Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, has announced her intention to contest the Ogun State governorship election in 2027.

 

Obasanjo recently registered with the All Progressives Congress (APC) at Ibogun, Ward 11, in Ifo Local Government Area of the state. She made her political ambition public during a radio interview with former Nigerian international footballer, Segun Odegbami.

 

Speaking during the interview, the former senator confirmed her return to active politics, attributing the decision to sustained pressure from supporters who believe she is best suited to lead the state.

 

“Like I told you, a group of people who I did not bring together, I did not form them into a group, have been working, I think, for two years now. And then they started talking to me about a year ago, saying, ‘Look, we think you are the best candidate. We want you back,’” she said.

 

Explaining her decision to join the ruling APC despite previously contesting elections under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Obasanjo noted that those who encouraged her return to politics are now members of the APC.

 

“So, I think APC is my natural home. I don’t have any animosity towards any individual or any group within the APC. I feel comfortable with all the actors I know within the APC,” she stated.

 

She added that she feels more at ease within the APC than with some political figures she previously worked with in the PDP, noting that some of them have since moved to other parties.

 

“I feel quite confident and happy to have made that decision. I have an absolute 100 per cent feeling it’s my natural home,” Obasanjo said.

 

Her declaration adds momentum to early political permutations ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State, with party activities and alignments already beginning to take shape.
