The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the immediate suspension of its planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise, directing all Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) to halt ongoing preparations.

 

The exercise, which was scheduled to commence on April 13, 2026, was designed to sanitise Nigeria’s voter register ahead of the 2027 general elections. It aimed to eliminate duplicate entries, remove deceased persons, and address cases of underage and otherwise ineligible registrants.

 

Following the directive, INEC has also withdrawn all public information related to the exercise from its official platforms and suspended associated publicity campaigns.

 

The decision comes in the wake of widespread reactions from political stakeholders and members of the public, many of whom expressed concerns over the timing, logistics, and potential risk of disenfranchising eligible voters.

 

Although the commission has not cancelled the exercise, it clarified that the process has been placed on hold pending further instructions. Electoral officials across the country have been advised to await new directives before taking any additional steps.

 

INEC has yet to provide a detailed explanation for the suspension, fueling speculation about possible reviews or adjustments to the framework of the exercise.

 

Observers say the development highlights the sensitivity surrounding electoral processes in Nigeria, particularly as preparations gradually begin for the 2027 elections. The commission is expected to engage stakeholders and possibly refine its approach before rescheduling the exercise.
