The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed Saturday, February 20, 2027, for the conduct of the Presidential and National Assembly elections, while the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will hold on Saturday, March 6, 2027.

 

The Commission announced the dates on Friday during a well-attended press conference at its headquarters in Abuja.

 

Chairman of the Commission, Joash Ojo Amupitan, said the release of the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections was in strict compliance with constitutional requirements and the provisions of the Electoral Act.

 

According to him, the tenure of the President and Vice President, as well as most Governors and their deputies, will expire on May 28, 2027. He added that the National and State Assemblies are expected to stand dissolved on June 8, 2027.

 

Amupitan explained that the Constitution mandates that elections must be conducted not earlier than 150 days and not later than 30 days before the expiration of the current tenure of elected officials.

 

“In line with these constitutional provisions and the Electoral Act, the Commission has carefully scheduled the 2027 general elections to ensure full compliance with the law,” he said.

 

The INEC chairman further directed Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory to publish the notice of election in their respective constituencies without delay.

 

He also disclosed that the comprehensive timetable detailing all pre-election and election activities had been uploaded to the Commission’s official website and circulated to all registered political parties to guide their preparations.

 

The announcement formally sets the stage for political parties, aspirants, and stakeholders to commence preparations for what is expected to be another crucial electoral cycle in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
