In an unprecedented moment that has reverberated worldwide, the Catholic Church has elected Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as its new leader, marking the first time in its 2,000-year history that an American has ascended to the papacy.

White smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel late Thursday, following a remarkably swift 24-hour conclave, announcing the election of the 69-year-old Chicago native as the next pontiff. Prevost will be known as Pope Leone XIV, succeeding Pope Francis, who died last month at age 88 after more than a decade at the helm of the Church.

Born in 1955 to a Spanish mother and a French-Italian father, Robert Prevost’s path to the papacy was forged through decades of missionary and administrative service. Drawn to the Augustinian order’s emphasis on unity and community, he was ordained in 1982 and soon sent to Peru, where he ministered in the remote Prelature of Chulucanas. Deeply connected to the region, he became a naturalized Peruvian citizen and held multiple key roles, including judicial vicar and theology professor.

His leadership trajectory continued in the U.S., where he served as provincial prior of the Midwest Augustinians and later as Prior General of the global order from 2001 to 2013. In 2014, Pope Francis appointed him apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Chiclayo, Peru, and the following year, he was named bishop of the diocese, overseeing a complex and diverse community.

Prevost’s career was not without challenges. In 2022, his diocese in Chiclayo came under scrutiny over its handling of abuse allegations involving two priests. Although the accusations were firmly denied by the diocese in 2024, the controversy did not derail his growing influence within the Church. In 2020, he was appointed to the Dicastery for Bishops, a powerful Vatican body responsible for selecting bishops across the globe—a move that solidified his place in the Church’s central governance.

Fluent in Spanish and widely respected for both pastoral sensitivity and organizational expertise, Pope Leone XIV is viewed by many as a continuation of Pope Francis’ progressive and inclusive vision for the Church. His election signals a profound shift, not only geographically but in tone and leadership style, as the Catholic Church enters a new chapter under its first American pontiff.

The world now turns its eyes to St. Peter’s Square, where Pope Leone XIV is expected to deliver his first public address, offering a glimpse into his priorities as spiritual leader to over a billion Catholics worldwide.
