Nigeria has lost one of its finest football sons with the passing of Henry Onyemanze Nwosu (MON), a gifted midfielder and member of the historic 1980 African Cup of Nations–winning Green Eagles team. His death marks the end of an era for Nigerian football and a painful moment for those who witnessed his brilliance on the pitch.

Henry Nwosu was not just a footballer; he was a symbol of passion, creativity and resilience in Nigerian football. As the youngest member of the squad that won Nigeria’s first AFCON title in 1980, he etched his name into the nation’s sporting history. His talent, composure and intelligence in midfield made him one of the most admired players of his generation.

Fondly nicknamed “Youngest Millionaire,” Nwosu represented Nigeria with pride for over a decade, earning around 60 caps for the national team and contributing memorable performances in continental competitions. Beyond the national team, he shone at club level with sides such as New Nigeria Bank and ACB Lagos, and later took his experience across Africa, leaving his mark wherever he played.

After hanging up his boots, he continued to serve the game he loved as a coach and mentor, guiding young players and contributing to Nigeria’s football development. His involvement in coaching roles—including working with youth teams and clubs—showed his deep commitment to nurturing the next generation.

Today, Nigerian football mourns a legend whose artistry and dedication inspired countless players and fans. Though he is gone, Henry Nwosu’s legacy will forever live on in the history of Nigerian football, in the memories of the 1980 triumph, and in the hearts of those who admired his skill and humility.

Announcing this on his social media page, former Captain of the then Green Eagles, Segun Odegbami said " After 5 days in hospital battling for his life, the one I call ‘Youngest Millionaire’ passed on at 4:00 am this morning at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos where he had been in Intensive Care since Wednesday.

It is with deep pain in my heart that I have to be the conveyor of the news of the death of Henry Nwosu MON, the youngest of the victorious 1980 AFCON squad.

May he rest peacefully with our Creator in Heaven".
