Heartland Queens Overpower Ibom Angels 2–0 to Rise in NWFL Premiership
Heartland Queens FC delivered a commanding performance on Wednesday, January 14, as they defeated Ibom Angels FC of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, 2–0 in their Matchday 6 encounter of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri.
From the opening whistle, the Owerri-based side asserted their authority, controlling possession, dictating the tempo, and pressing aggressively to confine Ibom Angels to their own half. The sustained pressure paid off in the 27th minute when Umejiaku Oluebube ended her goal drought with a thumping header, rising highest to connect with a perfectly delivered cross from Chizoba Johnson.
Buoyed by the opener, the Owerri Landladies continued to attack with confidence and intent. Their dominance was rewarded again just before the interval. In the 44th minute, Oluebube broke free down the flank before squaring the ball across goal for Oyinyechi Kalu, who showed great composure to slot home and double the advantage for the hosts.
During the halftime break, Johnson Chizoba and James Emmanuella were honoured with the Imo SWAN Heartland Queens Player of the Month awards for November and December 2025 respectively. The awards were presented by the Secretary, Tunde Liade, in recognition of their outstanding performances.
The second half saw a more balanced contest, but Heartland Queens soon re-established control, creating several scoring opportunities and keeping Ibom Angels under sustained pressure. Although no further goals were added, the hosts managed the game efficiently, maintaining defensive solidity to secure all three points.
The victory lifts Heartland Queens to fourth place on the NWFL Premiership table with eight points, while Ibom Angels drop to fifth with seven points.
Heartland Queens will now turn their attention to Matchday 7, where they face a tough away fixture against Rivers Angels in Port Harcourt, as they look to build on this impressive result and strengthen their push up the league standings.
