The Gwagwalada Football Council has commended the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Football Association for successfully organizing the maiden edition of the FCT Inter-Area Councils Women’s Tournament, which concluded at the weekend with AMAC Area Council emerging as champions.

AMAC clinched the historic title after narrowly defeating Gwagwalada Area Council 1-0, thanks to a first-half goal by Ruth Torsue. The thrilling final took place at the FIFA Goal Project Pitch, Package B of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, on Sunday, April 27, 2025.

Speaking on behalf of the Gwagwalada Football Council, Vice Chairman Babatunde Akintade lauded the FCT FA and the tournament’s sponsor, Mrs. Pat Ajuma Ayegba, for organizing a competition that has unearthed new talents in women’s football, particularly in Gwagwalada. Akintade promised that Gwagwalada would return stronger in the next edition, ready to challenge every participating Area Council for the title.

The Council also expressed gratitude to the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, for attending the final, describing his presence as a reflection of his strong commitment to grassroots football development.

Earlier in the day, Kwali Area Council edged Kuje Area Council 4-3 on penalties to claim third place after a goalless draw in regulation time.

As rewards for their efforts, AMAC received a cash prize of ₦250,000, Gwagwalada took home ₦150,000 as runners-up, and third-placed Kwali earned ₦100,000.

A key highlight of the closing ceremony was the conferment of a Meritorious Award on NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau for his outstanding contributions to the development of football in Nigeria and across West Africa.

Speaking after receiving the award, Gusau praised the organizers and the tournament sponsor, Mrs. Pat Ajuma Ayegba, for their dedication to nurturing young talents.

“Championships like this are the real platforms for talent discovery, and I must commend the organizers for their vision and execution,” he said. “This initiative perfectly aligns with my agenda of promoting grassroots football development across Nigeria.”

Tournament initiator and sponsor Pat Ajuma Ayegba expressed immense satisfaction with the tournament’s success, thanking all participating teams and stakeholders.

“This is a dream come true,” Ayegba said. “I am grateful to the NFF President for honoring us with his presence and for inspiring these young female footballers. I also appreciate the support from the Minister of Women’s Affairs and the leadership of the FCT FA.”
