The 3rd edition of the annual Judith Chime Women Football Championship got underway in Enugu on Sunday with Greenfoot and GESA football teams smashing four past their opponents, Onuchukwu Wisdom scored a brace in the 7th and 25th minutes while Amarachi Ohaeri made it 3-0 on the quarter of an hour mark before Anastesia Uzor added the 4th as Greenfoot ran out 4-0 winners over Bravehearts.
In the other opening fixture GESA FC hammered Salt Jewels 4-1 Udeagha Grace scoring a brace, Gideon Chidinma and Ohuche Agnes scoring the third and fourth goals.
Didi Divine scored Salt Jewels only consolatory goal.
Only two matches were decided in Sunday's opening day of the week-long championship which produced nine goals as a result of logistic reasons.
The competition continues tomorrow, Monday, 16 December, 2024.
Originally, 16 teams were listed to participate in the championship after duly completing registration formalities.
But only 11 have so far arrived the Coal City for the week-long festival of women football, with five teams unable to eventually participate over varying reasons.
Those who could not make it to Enugu despite having registered for the championship include Delta Babes of Asaba, Fortress Ladies of Benin, Casmog Academy of Ogun State and Moje Queens of Kwara State will not participate in this year's after they pulled out citing several reasons.
Title holders, Imo Strikers, are already in Enugu for a possible defense of the title they won in 2023 in Asaba, Delta State.
