Monday, November 18, 2024, was a historic day for Lafia Local Government Area’s football team, the 2024 Nasarawa State Governor’s Cup champions. Fulfilling his promise, the Executive Governor of Nasarawa State, Engr. Abdullahi Sule, sponsored the team to Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, to watch and cheer the Super Eagles in their final Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match against Rwanda.

The delegation, led by the Chairman of the Nasarawa State Football Association, Salisu Usman Galadima ‘Basira,’ embarked on a remarkable journey. From a grand send-off in Lafia to their flight aboard Ibom Air, every detail of the trip reflected the Governor’s commitment to rewarding and inspiring the champions.

At the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, the young players and officials stood out in their sleek, customized jerseys, brimming with pride. They were treated to premium seats and an electrifying match atmosphere as they joined fans in supporting the Super Eagles.

Team captain Abdulrasheed Ibrahim expressed his amazement:
“This is still like a mirage to us. It’s amazing as we never thought we would watch the National Team play live. This experience will reignite our spirit of excellence and hard work to fulfill our dream of playing for Nigeria someday.”

Coach Umar Mohammed ‘Skimbo’, attending his first live Super Eagles game, shared his joy:
“I have learned and achieved a lot coming here today, particularly in observing the teams’ pre-game training activities. I want to thank Governor Sule for this unforgettable opportunity.”

The State FA Chairman, Salisu Galadima, praised the Governor’s groundbreaking initiative:
“This is the first time in Nigeria that a Governor’s Cup-winning team has been sponsored to watch the National Team play a competitive game. It reflects Governor Sule’s dedication to sports development in Nasarawa State.”

Although the Super Eagles fell to a 2-1 defeat against Rwanda—despite Samuel Chukwueze’s opening goal—Nigeria had already secured qualification for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco. The Nasarawa delegation’s unwavering support for the team was a highlight, with cheers, selfies, and flag-waving capturing their excitement.

As the public address system acknowledged their presence, the delegation celebrated the opportunity to witness history and gain exposure to top-tier football.

This landmark initiative underscores Governor Sule’s vision to inspire Nasarawa’s youth through sports. His pledge to sponsor players for international exposure further cements his commitment to unearthing and nurturing local talent.
