Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has officially launched the reconstruction of the 25-kilometre Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene Road, marking a major step in his administration’s ongoing infrastructure renewal drive.

 

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Governor Otti described the project as a long-overdue intervention critical to the economic and social vitality of the region. Despite the road being a federal highway, he said the state government secured the necessary approvals to undertake the project in the interest of the people.

 

“Although this is a federal highway, we proactively secured the necessary approvals to take it on, driven by our belief that infrastructure serving our people should never be hindered by jurisdictional boundaries,” the Governor stated.

 

For decades, the Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene Road has been in deplorable condition, posing serious challenges to motorists, traders, and residents. The reconstruction project, expected to be completed within 18 months, will feature solar-powered streetlights and other modern amenities.

 

GELD Construction Ltd has been awarded the contract, and the Governor urged residents and stakeholders to cooperate with the company to ensure smooth execution and timely delivery.

 

“With this reconstruction now underway, we are turning the page on years of neglect,” Otti said. “I urge all stakeholders to support the contractors to deliver a project that meets global standards.”

 

Later in the day, Governor Otti also flagged off the construction of the 13.5-kilometre Ariam Usaka Ring Road in Ikwuano Local Government Area, another key project designed to connect agricultural communities and stimulate rural enterprise.

 

According to the Governor, the Ariam Usaka Ring Road project is strategic to the economic growth of the area as it links major farming zones and will boost local trade and mobility. The project, also to be executed by GELD Construction Ltd, is expected to be completed within 12 months.

 

“This project is close to my heart because of its potential to unlock prosperity for our people,” Otti noted. “It forms part of our broader infrastructure plan covering Oboro, Ibere, Oloko, Ariam, and other neighbouring communities.”

 

Governor Otti expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) and the Federal Government for their support and prompt approvals that made the projects possible. He also commended the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, and the Abia State Ministry of Works, led by Engr. Don Otumchere Oti, for their dedication.

 

The Governor concluded by appreciating the people of Abia, especially residents of Ikwuano, for their steadfast support since 2015, assuring them that his administration remains committed to ending decades of infrastructural neglect and building a prosperous, sustainable Abia.
